Adult Education in March

book studyAdult Sunday School is offered every Sunday morning at 9:00 am in the Parish Hall. March 2 through April 6 the topic will be “John One.”

For the first part of the Lenten season, the Adult Sunday School class will take up again our simple group reflective reading, gradually working our way though the Gospel of John. Each week we listen to and share a small portion of the Gospel text. No homework necessary!

You don’t need to have attended before. This is not an academic exercise, but an opportunity for open reflection — “going deeper” with the text and one another. Please join us!

Women of the Hebrew Scriptures

eve and adamWe will pick up Sharon Inger’s lively series on Women of the Hebrew Scriptures again on Sunday, April 7, and continuing on April 14 and April 21. The series was blizzarded-out in February and we are fortunate to be able to re-schedule it. After bringing us back up to speed on April 7, Sharon will lead us in the following:

April 7: Daughters and Sisters—protectors of the covenant April 14: “Bad Girls” or Did Eve get a bad rap?
April 21: Warriors and Queens—defenders of the people

Following this, on April 28, Ruth Cambpell will lead our session in a special presentation on the exciting ministry she will be leading here this summer, providing food to young people in need, “Free Food for Kids.”

Changes to the Adult Sunday School Schedule

fireplaceFebruary snowstorms and March travel schedules have meant that we’ve needed to make a few changes to the Adult Sunday School calendar. Adult Sunday School meets every Sunday at 9:00 am in the Parish Hall at the Church of the Holy Spirit, and all are always welcome to join in.

This coming Sunday, February 24 (weather permitting) and for the three Sundays following in March — March 3, 10, and 17 — we will return to our small reflective group study of John’s Gospel. Remember, you’re always welcome to join in at any time.

We’ll then begin diving in to Sharon Inger’s lively series on Women of the Hebrew Scriptures on Sunday, April 7, continue the series on April 14, and conclude on April 21. More details on this program will be coming soon, in the April edition of Together (the Church of the Holy Spirit monthly newsletter), and here on the CHS blog.

After Women of the Hebrew Scriptures concludes, we’ll begin a series on Dallas Willard’s Renovation of the Heart. This will be similar in format to our earlier sessions on Willard’s Divine Conspiracy, with a shared viewing of a short clip of Willard speaking, a few brief comments on the topic of the day by Father Adam, and then ample opportunity for conversation and reflections from the group. Renovation of the Heart offers profound but practical material on making real progress in our spiritual lives, and we think you’ll very much enjoy working with this series.

Please note that Adult Sunday School sessions will not held on Palm Sunday (March 24), or on Easter (March 31). Questions? Call the parish office at 508-255-0433.

CHS Men’s Study Group Welcomes New Members

mens study groupThe Men’s Study Group meets each Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, and we’d love to have a few new faces join us. We’re just now finishing up a series of Old Testament lectures and will begin a series on the New Testament on February 26.

We welcome more men to the study, which includes a half-hour taped lecture by Professor Bart D. Ehrman, with discussion, plus free-wheeling, frequently humorous conversation about our lives as we gather week by week.

We gather every Tuesday in the craft room at the far end of the Sunday School area at Church of the Holy Spirit. Please feel free to come and try it out. Or if you know somebody who might be interested, please share this post with a friend. Questions? Contact Bruce Lederhouse at 508-240-2853.

Epiphany Friday Monastic Lunch Series at CHS

Daily BreadDuring the Epiphany season, beginning January 4, bring a salad or sandwich to share lunch on Fridays at 12 noon in the parish hall. Beverages will be provided.

Join us as we will eat in silence while watching a 20-minute DVD featuring well-known progressive scholars and theologians as they discuss the importance of Living the Questions. After watching the film we’ll discuss what we have heard over coffee and dessert. Reservations are not needed, just show up! We’d love to see you there.

Questions? See Fr. Ken.

Adult Education at Church of the Holy Spirit

CHS offers many opportunities for adults throughout the year to study, explore, and reflect. All are welcome, so please join us. And bring a friend!

Adult Christian Education is held on Sundays from 9:00 am to 9:45 am, in between the early service and the 10:00 am service. Right now we’re continuing an ongoing study and shared reflections on John’s Gospel. All are welcome.

The CHS Book Discussion Group meets after the 10:00 am service and wraps up around noon time. This week we continue with our look at Nativities & Passions: Words for Transformation written by Martin Lee Smith, SSJE. The discussion group is open to anyone, and you can join in at any time.

The Thursdays at Three series continues this December with Waiting With Mary. Join us for an exploration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of our Lord. This special offering will include music, poetry and other writings, as well as a thought-provoking assemblage of images of Mary from around the world. We’ll gather in the North Transept of the church on Thursdays at 3:00 pm, December 6, 13, 20. Please come.
