STEWARDSHIP TIME 2020…OUR TIME: It is Stewardship season at the Church of the Holy Spirit.  Letters and Pledge Cards have been mailed to every household. If you not have received your mailing, please contact the Church Office and one will be mailed to you or pick one up on the desk in the Reception Room. With each of us making a Pledge, we can continue the vital and varied ministries of the Parish. Receiving all Pledges by the first Sunday of October would be very helpful as next year’s budget is planned. They may be returned by mail, offering, or to the Church Office. Thank you!

Sunday, September 15:  The Fall season of the Book Discussion Group will begin, in the Fireplace Room after the 10 am service. Members should bring ideas for the book we will read this Fall. Brian and Brooke Skea

Sunday, September 29:  SHEPHERD GROUPS & EVENSONG – All Shepherd groups will meet together at a celebration of St. Michael and All Angels in a Choral Evensong  at 5 pm.  Bring your friends and join us first in the church for Evensong and then in the Parish Hall for a reception hosted by the Shepherd Groups of CHS.

In honor of St. Francis, we will have a bulletin board in the Parish Hall with pictures of your pets. Please send or bring the picture to the office. Please put your name and your pet’s name on the back of the photo. Deadline Sunday, September 29. We will have a Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 6 at 3 pm in the Parish Hall.

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS:  The 2019-2020 Church School Year has begun!  SAVE THE DATE –  Friday October 18 – Pumpkin Carving – details and sign up are on Church School and Youth Group Bulletin boards. Plans are underway for a Middle School Retreat (5th – 9th Graders) November 15-17 at the Barbara Harris Camp in Greenfield, NH. These retreats are always great fun. Interested? Choir rehearsal has resumed! We begin work on Evensong, as well as Adam’s+ last service, and All Saints’ Day. We are always happy to welcome new singers to this joyful ministry. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7 pm to 8:30 pm in the church.

CHS HEALTH MINISTRIES:  Cape Cod Healthcare is providing a free service to groups interested in learning how to make the plans we may all prefer to ignore: Advance Care Planning. Learn how to start the conversations, identify a healthcare agent,  and more. HOLIDAY BAZAAR:  SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 – SAVE THE DATE! It’s that time of year again! There are many ways you can support this popular and successful fund raising parish event. Gently Used Jewelry: We welcome “good costume” or “fine” jewelry donations.  Drop off box is in Parish Office. Clearly label these donations so we can price them properly in advance of the bazaar. Volunteer sign up and other donation drop offs will be in October. More information will be available as we get closer to the date! SAVE THE DATES – 42nd ANNUAL HOLIDAY ANTIQUES SHOW AND SALE: Plans are again underway for the 42nd Annual Antiques Show and Sale to be held on Friday, November 29, 10 am – 4 pm and on Saturday, November 30,  10 am – 3 pm in the Parish Hall.

Sunday, September 1:  ADULT EDUCATION – Fireplace Room, 9 am. We continue with Genesis. This week, we’ll be reading and reflecting on The Sacrifice of Isaac. This is a lively, interactive Bible study, led by Adam+. No homework required! Just come, in spirit, mind, and heart.

Sunday, September 8:  HOW HE PREPARES TO PREACH. For the past ten years, we have had the gift of hearing Adam+’s sermons, week after week, on the lectionary readings. These are given to us in his own distinctive style, which some have called Rabbinical. (He takes that as a high compliment.) We know that he preaches without scripts or notes. Have you ever
wondered how he gets ready? On Sunday, September 8, after the 10 o’clock service, we’ve invited him to reflect with us, discussing how his sermons come into being. Doug Fromm and I will be his “interviewers.” Come to the Fireplace Room after enjoying a few minutes of coffee hour, for a lively and revelatory time. Who knows? In addition to celebrating this
dimension of Adam+’s ministry among us, it may also inspire us to new ways of engaging scripture, ourselves, as we prepare for worship. Tom Dewing

Sunday, September 1:  Youth breakfast – After the 10 am service, please join us in the Parish Hall for another wonderful brunch prepared and served by our youth group. September’s Menu: Stuffed French Toast (Apple and Blueberry), Sausage, Fruit, Juice, Coffee and Tea.
$8 per person – Children under 18 are free.

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS:  Our Summer program, “Veggie Tale Theater”, concludes Sunday, September 1. The 2019-2020 Church School Year will begin on September 8.  Look for an e-mail with instructions on how to register on line.

Monday, September 2: In observance of Labor Day, the office will be closed.

Friday, September 6:  LABYRINTH  WALK – Parish Hall at 10 am.  The guided walk takes about 45 minutes; the labyrinth remains up until noon for people to drop in to walk. Give yourself the gift of time and come walk with us, let your reflective time on the labyrinth be a time to rejuvenate and relax. Questions please contact Gail Smith+.

Sunday, August 25:  After the 10 am service, during the Coffee Hour, please join Cheryl Kyle and the Keeffe-Jones family for a presentation about their October 2018 visit to Tanzania.  Come hear about the exciting happenings at Endupoto Primary School and Oljoro Secondary School; both schools are located in the Maasai Steppe and are supported by our Outreach Committee. We will have a picture slide show of the visit to both schools, as well as some safari highlights from the Tanzania trip.

HEALTH MINISTRIES COMMITTEE:  Summer is still here bringing heat waves, heavy thunder storms, tornados, sharks, seals… so we thought it good to  repeat our reminders on outdoor safety precautions.  Be it protecting yourself with sunscreen, bug spray, wearing your helmet when cycling and being mindful of the area you are in, please protect yourself and those around you. Our reading group meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Parish Library from 10 am to 12 noon to discuss books we have chosen that relate to our spiritual journeys. Tuesday, September 3 we will begin to discuss Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor, an Episcopal priest who, while teaching a college course on the New Testament, is surprised by her discovery of God in the many non-Christian religions in the world. Friday, August 16:  August Garden Party –  8:30 am to noon.  All  parishioners and  their friends are welcomed to join us. Come when convenient and stay as long as you can. Wednesday, August 14:  APOLLO MISSION ANNIVERSARY & BOOK STUDY! – There will be a special showing of the academy award winning film, Hidden Figures, at the Eastham Public Library at 3 pm, followed by discussion. The film is about the three African American women working as human computers on the Apollo Project. Sponsored by the Martin Luther King Action Team of Nauset Interfaith. All welcome!

ANTIQUE SHOW:  The 42nd Annual Antiques Show and Sale Committee has mailed our Patron donation letters to parishioners. If you wish to make a donation, you still have time to send in your check and to be included in the patron listing in the Antique Show booklet. Forms are available in the parish office. Please make out your check to the “Church of the Holy Spirit” and note that it is for the Antique Show. A donation of $20 will be greatly appreciated. Mail your donation to the church or place it in the offering plate at any church service. Donations with patron names in the booklet need to be submitted by 10/31/19. Friday, August 16:  August Garden Party –  8:30 am to noon.  All  parishioners and  their friends are welcomed to join us. Come when convenient and stay as long as you can. There is always a break about 10 am when we gather around for coffee and donut holes and get to know each other better. READING FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH ON TUESDAY MORNINGS: COME JOIN US! Our reading group meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Parish Library from 10 am to 12 noon to discuss books we have chosen that relate to our spiritual journeys. On September 3 we will begin to discuss Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor, an Episcopal priest who, while teaching a college course on the New Testament, is surprised by her discovery of God in the many non-Christian religions in the world. READING FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH ON TUESDAY MORNINGS: Our reading group is taking the summer off and will resume meeting September 3rd and then on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Parish Library from 10 am to noon. We discuss books we have chosen that relate to our spiritual journeys. On September 3, we will begin to discuss Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor. Our time together includes worship and “checking in” on what’s going on in our lives while nurturing our spiritual gardens, weeds included! Summer Hosts Needed: The Refugee Support Team (Nauset Interfaith Association) is seeking hosts for this summer’s Welcome Weekends for refugee families. Providing joyful mini-vacations at the Cape for refugees is only one part of this; more important is sharing and learning with persons whose stories are remarkable. The two weekends chosen for this year are:  July 12-14 and August 9-11.
